The cast and roles include:
1. Sayaka Nakaya (Team A) — Orine Aida (13)
2. Amina Satō (Team B) — Yuuka Ichijō (14)
3. Sawako Hata (Team KII) — Suzuko Kanzaki (14)
4. Sumire Satō (Team B) — Mimori Kishida (17)
5. Haruka Ishida (Team B) — Kanata Shinonome (15)
6. Kumi Yagami (Team S) — Sonata Shinonome (10)
7. Mayu Watanabe (Team B) — Chieri Sono (13)
8. Karen Iwata (AKB48 Trainee) — Nagisa Motomiya (13)
9. Mao Mita (Team M) — Makoto Yokomizo (16)
Shoji Kawamori, the co-creator of the Macross franchise, is the project planner and the chief director, and Toshimichi Ootsuki (Evangelion: 1.0 You Are [Not] Alone) is the executive producer. As the newspaper puts it, AKB48 producer Yasushi Akimoto is "of course" planning and supervising the project.
Mari Okada (AnoHana, Toradora!) is supervising and writing the scripts, and Mikan Ehime (Macross Frontier) is designing the characters. Yoshimasa Hiraike (Working!!/Wagnaria!!, Amagami SS) is the actual hands-on director of the anime at Satelight (Macross Frontier, Aquarion).
In an era when entertainment is outlawed, there is an idol group that offers underground guerrilla concerts despite the danger. The name of that female group is AKB0048. Until just before the annihilation of Earth, AKB48 shined as legendary idols. This is the story of the super galactic idol team that inherited that name.
